Is it really a laughing matter? To analyse this, we will look at different scenarios.
A patient in a mental hospital saved another from attempting suicide by pulling him out of the pool. the doctor in charge after reviewing the rescuer’s file requested him to his office in order to discharge him because what he had done could only be executed by a conscious individual, the doctor started by being sorry that the man initially saved later on hang himself and committed murder only for the patient to respond that its him who hung him up to dry.
We have a lot of jokes on mental illness by comedians. on television also punch lines and programmes on this condition are aired some people call others ‘psycho’ or even ‘schizoid’ and what we only do is but laugh at these jokes and do not think critically about individuals who are affected by this disturbing conditions therefore losing sight on problems that need attention and realistic solutions.
A teen college kid commits suicide online while people are watching. He did this in front of a live webcam by taking a drug overdose. At first watchers thought it was funny and encouraged him, others asked whether the dose was big enough to kill him, others dared him while a few, tried to talk him out of it. Still after taking the overdose, some continued cracking jokes.
After realising it was not a joke, the police were notified and by the time they arrived, it was already late. Later on it was discovered that the college teen kid was suffering from manic depression.
It not being clear how many people was watching this drama, it was still evident that most of them enjoyed this ordeal by the kind of messages they posted. Some wrote “Oh, my God.” others “loll,” which means “laughing out loud,” and “Hashanah
Family and friends were bereaved and infuriated at the same time because the viewers and the host website could have saved him but had no option but to come to terms with the tragedy
Other similar cases have been reported where a man hanged himself while chatting online and another shot himself in the head in front of an online audience.
An elderly man was hit by a hit and run driver and lay still by the roadside as other motorists passed by. Pedestrians did nothing but only stared from the side walk. Those who wanted to help were drawn back by his bleeding and unconsciousness, any driver who appeared to stop eventually pulled back to traffic. a man with a motorcycle approaches then rides away
This was a very disturbing scene but what is depicted here is the inhuman nature of people without regard to each other just watching and doing nothing.
Maybe he could have survived had he received a helping hand but the poor old man bled to death. Had it been mind boggling he could have really received the help he deserved.
This scenarios only but serve to help us practise our moral ethos help our neighbours and think about how we affect others through our actions.
